Story : The Night, I killed Kamini – A myth busting thriller!

Do you believe in Ghosts? I do not. However, some incidents may coincide with few moments which we can never explain or answer clearly. One such incident happened in my life too when I was young.

“You people need real guts to stay in that 7th ward” every person who crossed our street used to exclaim at us. As soon as the clock ticks 10pm in the night you cannot find anyone walking outside. Even strangers think twice to enter our street at night time.

devilAll because of Kamini, a girl who was allegedly killed and hanged. Only police investigations later confirmed that was a murder. It happened two years ago. After that incident, that house was abandoned. To our bad luck our home was next to her house. We hardly knew about her, because just in few weeks we bought this home, she was killed. Many gossiped bad about her character. We could not afford a new home for this issue and my father decided that we should stay here.

Every night I behaved like a panic-maniac. I have heard people tell stories about Kamini walking near her home at nights, some say they heard her hissing voice when they go near her house. To my bad luck there is just a wall that separate my room and her house. I never opened the windows on that side, even on day time. ‘Kamini’s windows’ that’s how I called it.

Power-cuts at midnights daunt me completely. Without a fan, I couldn’t sleep. I used to stay awake all the time till the power returns and every minute was like watching a devil movie alone. My ears heard all the stories that people commented about Kamini. I used to feel her spirit around, but I never dared to open my eyes.

That was one such night I never forget. Midnight around 1 or 1.30. Again a power-cut woke me up. I never opened my eyes in darkness, but that day I felt some breathe near my face. I was sure someone breathing mildly near me. I closed my eyes so tight and hid under my blanket. Slowly the breath moved away. I do not feel any sign of that breathe. I decided to peep through the blanket. Slowly I made a split to peek out. It was a complete darkness.

On that pitch black I could not see anything. Even I cannot walk into the next room where mom and dad were sleeping, then. I desperately wanted to go there. The menace appeared from my behind, yellow lights from the Kamini’s windows. That was from her house, someone blowing a torch light. I tried to scream out the fear, but I was frozen in fear. No voice coming out from my mouth. Suddenly I spotted a shadow of a person, immediately the torch went off.

I decided to run to the next room. I got down from the bed like a cat. My room’s door got closed with a jolt. I thought I was dead. But I hyperventilated and could even hear my own heart beat. I decided that I have no choice either to die in this room or get out of it.

“Why Kamini is threatening a school kid like me for no reason? Does she want to talk to me or tell anything as happens in movies?, or Is she trying to take revenge on the people who killed her? If so, then why she target an innocent soul like me? Shall I talk to her?” my mind asked 100 questions in a minute.

“But people told that Kamini was not a good girl and she deserved to die. People hate her,” I searched for a conclusion. In a split second I heard some low voice near my door, sure that didn’t belong to my family.

I never heard such a rugged voice before. It was myself versus the devil then. I had no choice to fight back Kamini.

I gathered every ounce of courage inside me.. It was complete darkness, I was a little girl in a room with the door closed. I was not brave to try opening the door, but brave enough to do another thing. I tiptoed towards the Kamini’s windows, I can hear the voice even better, but I decided and said to myself “I am not going to panic”. My next move was the most courageous act I have ever done in my life. I got nearer to the Kamini’s windows and released the bolt to open it. Yes! You may feel I was a lunatic, but I did it. I felt the fear even in my spine, but I had no other choice. I did it.

AaaaaaahAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa” I screamed out loud breaking the fear to look at Kamini’s house. The voice near my door disappeared, but somebody knocked the door so hard to open. My screaming, would have woken up the entire street, to stop the screaming was never a choice for me.  I continued to shout as loud as I could.

The power came back on, so as the street lights. I used that dim ray of light to spot the lamp’s switch in my room. I heard somebody screaming louder behind my door. This time in pain, I am sure.

“Open the door” my dad’s voice shouted “Honey are you ok? Open the door!”. I rushed and opened it! I found a shocking scene outside, there was a man in mask lying down and screaming in pain. I think my dad stabbed him with a knife.

We all rushed outside to call for help. “Thief! Thief!” mom and dad shouted, the neighbors came to the rescue, they called the police as well.

The Police arrived and took that masked guy in custody. He was not dead! “I heard my daughter screaming and rushed to rescue, this man tried to stab me with a knife, but I fought back, I had no choice but to stab him back to save ourselves, so I did”, my Dad answered the police.

The next day newspapers read “The Kamini myth is revealed and it was the thief who disguised as a devil. The Police arrested Kamini’s murderer, a thief and rapist who confessed that he had raped and killed the young girl two years back. He was stabbed while he attempted to steal the very next house where Kamini was murdered…” News Channels praised my dad a lot for his brave act! Also they mentioned that I was so clever and courageous to shout out for help opening that window amid of the wide spread romour about Kamini. They all called me “The myth buster kid who killed ‘Kamini (Devil)’.”

A few weeks later the masked man was sentenced to death.

People never talked wrong about Kamini then onwards and even felt so sad about her. People started walking free during night times. The Kamini threat is not there anymore with anyone. 7th ward is no more a devil’s street.

My parents are sleeping in my room now a days, but I am not ready to open the Kamini’s windows yet.

KaminiIt is another night. The power went off. I am in fear again.

“Shall I open the Window?” A voice asked me!!!

It’s my dad! “No daddy, please do not”

“Why?, we all know now that there is no Kamini devil, she is not a devil, so please don’t be scared dear” Daddy tried to convince me.

“Daddy, I want to tell you something”.

“What sweet heart?” daddy went on to open the windows and did.

“Daddy, I did not lock the door from inside that day!” I replied.
