Know : Make an Automatic Diary using Notepad.

Did you know that you can also use Notepad as a simple digital diary or a personal Log-Book ? Well, if you didn’t then follow the below mentioned steps to make one for yourself !

  • Open Notepad.
  • Type .LOG (in capital letters) and hit enter.
  • Save it with any name and close it.
  • Open it again.

When you open the file again you will see the current date and time being inserted automatically after the .LOG line. This will happen automatically every time you reopen the the notepad file.

Know : Grow and Shrink inside an Ames Room

Do you know how the normal sized humans transformed as Hobbits in the movie The Lord Of The Rings? You too can shrink and grow back as they did 🙂 Because they used several Ames room sets in Shire sequences to make the heights of the diminutively-sized hobbits correct when standing next to the taller Gandalf.

What is an Ames Room? Well before getting into the detailing watch this video by The Royal Institution

An Ames room is a distorted room that is used to create an optical illusion. Probably influenced by the writings of Hermann Helmholtz, it was invented by American ophthalmologist Adelbert Ames, Jr. in 1934, and constructed in the following year.

An Ames room is constructed so that from the front it appears to be an ordinary cubic-shaped room, with a back wall and two side walls parallel to each other and perpendicular to the horizontally level floor and ceiling. However, this is a trick of perspective and the true shape of the room is trapezoidal: the walls are slanted and the ceiling and floor are at an incline, and the right corner is much closer to the front-positioned observer than the left corner (or vice versa). As a result of the optical illusion, a person standing in one corner appears to the observer to be a giant, while a person standing in the other corner appears to be a dwarf. The illusion is so convincing that a person walking back and forth from the left corner to the right corner appears to grow or shrink.

Studies have shown that the illusion can be created without using walls and a ceiling; it is sufficient to create an apparent horizon (which in reality will not be horizontal) against an appropriate background, and the eye relies on the apparent relative height of an object above that horizon.

Publishing a book with contribution from 100 writers is an uphill task, especially on a debut. 🙂 We know it. Yet the purpose which is fuelling our efforts is “To make a difference and prove any difficulty is not impossible, it is just harder to achieve”

The Idea of Blank Space has its story, backed by a strong belief to inspire people by not by telling the famous fight backs of popular people. It’s about sharing the inspirations of people who are just like You, I or anyone who reads this. Who we can relate to ourselves easily.

Blank SpaceFor all who are new : Blank Space : Filled with inspiration is an anthology styled book to be written by 100 writers and will have 100 short stories of inspiring moments in life.

You can write about any topic / issue which can inspire people and leave a positive vibe to them. You can choose any genre fiction, semifiction, true stories or even a memoir as a story would do it.

What differences that this book can make?

Well, it is about the intensity. 100 people from around the globe will actually form a community of people around them who either needs inspiration or provides inspiration. It multiplies. Blank Space will do it. Actually the journey starts after publishing as we have plans to make short films, school plays, etc based on the stories in the future(of course with writer’s consent). But let’s focus on one step at a time.

A feel of your friend writing in a book is so special for anyone. A feel to say “I wrote a story in this book, which you can find online with this ISBN” will be a fantastic feel for someone who get published for the first time.

It is not as difficult to write a complete book and take the burden of publishing, sales and most importantly getting the readers. Nothing can give a writer a happiness than to reach more people to read his/her writing. Blank Space will make that happen.

Blank Space will be translated into other languages and published. So far, English and Tamil versions are confirmed. We will expand it to other languages if we get the right resources.

Writers can earn without any investment.

Where we stand now?

So far, more than 35+ writers have assured and started sending their entries. So miles to go to catch up 100+ entries and pick the best 100 out of them. Due date is extended for entries, till the official announcement from us about the close of entries.

The revenue generated by this initiative will be invested to inaugurate Study Centers in rural areas of Tamilnadu, India, where students can learn anything they wish to learn. SPECIALLY, WITHOUT ANY NEED TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY!

Our “Money-free Learning” model will enable them to take off the burden of fees and focus on what they wish to learn. We do not ask for any donations, we want to earn, and set an exemplary system that is self suffice. Blank Space will help us do it.

Curiosity : Something behind TV and Radio

Watching TVWhile watching TV or Listening to FM Radio, what we do? We switch between channels/stations which in fact is tuning the frequencies  of  electromagnetic spectrum which are measured in Hertz (Hz). By the way who regulates this? What frequency is used for what purpose? Is there any standards? Know more now…

Radio spectrum refers to the part of the electromagnetic spectrum corresponding to radio frequencies – that is, frequencies lower than around 300 GHz. Electromagnetic waves in this frequency range, called radio waves, are used for radio communication and various other applications.

So, your TV or Radio Stations produce the radio waves which you receive and enjoy.

Who can generate the Radio waves? Who controls it? 

The generation of radio waves is strictly regulated by the government in most countries, coordinated by an international standards body called the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Different parts of the radio spectrum are allocated for different radio transmission technologies and applications. In some cases, parts of the radio spectrum is sold or licensed to operators of private radio transmission services (for example, cellular telephone operators or broadcast television stations). Ranges of allocated frequencies are often referred to by their provisioned use (for example, cellular spectrum or television spectrum)

Flag of ITU.svgITU is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that is responsible for issues that concern information and communication technologies. The ITU coordinates the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promotes international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, works to improve telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world, and assists in the development and coordination of worldwide technical standards. The ITU is active in areas including broadband Internet, latest-generation wireless technologies, aeronautical and maritime navigation, radio astronomy, satellite-based meteorology, convergence in fixed-mobile phone, Internet access, data, voice, TV broadcasting, and next-generation networks.

ITU, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is a member of the United Nations Development Group. Its membership includes 193 Member States and around 700 Sector Members and Associates.

Okay, what are the frequencies or wave lengths used by our Televisions? What about our mobile phones?

Well, the ITU regulates it along with governments of various countries and allocates the frequencies as bands, for various purposes. The list below will explain the typical allocation.

band is a small section of the spectrum of radio communication frequencies, in which channels are usually used or set aside for the same purpose. Above 300 GHz, the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by Earth’s atmosphere is so great that the atmosphere is effectively opaque, until it becomes transparent again in the near-infrared and optical window frequency ranges.

To prevent interference and allow for efficient use of the radio spectrum, similar services are allocated in bands. For example, broadcasting, mobile radio, or navigation devices, will be allocated in non-overlapping ranges of frequencies. Each of these bands has a basic bandplan which dictates how it is to be used and shared, to avoid interference and to set protocol for the compatibility of transmitters and receivers.
