A Message for the Day : Understand Correctly

Understand correctlyUnderstanding is the key in many aspects of life. Most of the conflicts happen in this world are due to misunderstanding. When it comes to philosophies we ensure that we get the right sense of it. Else it would end up in an absolute mess.

Once a Sage advised his disciples “All the living beings on this earth are a form of God. So you should learn to respect one another mutually and listen to them. All disciples observed his words so obediently and owed to follow his advice in their life.

After a few days, when a disciple was in a pursuit to bring some firewood from a nearby forest, he heard people screaming and running around. A man shouted “Please run away, hide somewhere, an elephant gone amok and it is nearing us. Run! Run!”

Everyone found a spot to hide, some climbed up the tall trees and some went into the bushes. This disciple was a lonely man seemed not to bother about the situation. A man from a tree shouted at him “Run away and hide! Why are you standing like this?”

He calmly replied “Why should I move? Run?, I know all living beings are a form of God. So as the Elephant!” He stood still.

The mad elephant appeared in his sight. “What is your problem?” he asked the elephant and started to sing some hymn.

“Idiot, Run Away” a few people screamed again from atop the trees.  He didn’t bother to move. The beast curled him with its trunk, lifted him up and thrown him into a spiny bush. His lucky day he survived as the elephant moved away.

But he paid the price for his madness, with severe wounds. He limped back to the ashram and went straight away to his master. He told everything happened there.

“You said once all living beings are a form of god, then why that Elephant hurt me, when I was singing a hymn for him? I am also a living being- a form of god right? So how can the elephant hurt me?” he asked the sage with narrow sense.

The Sage replied “That’s right, you too a form of god, so also the elephant, but why haven’t you listened to the words of fellow gods in human forms right atop the trees, who warned you to Run Away!?”

The disciple blinked and realized that he misunderstood the philosophy.

This is a fable to explain the importance of understanding the concepts of philosophies and religions correctly. Sometimes in real life, there are more interesting things of misunderstanding happens.

Once at a rehabilitation camp a doctor dropped a worm in a glass of alcohol and asked “What happened to the worm now?”

A participant replied “It’s Dead”

“So What you understand from this?” asked the doctor.

“We can kill all harmful worms in our stomach and intestines, if we drink alcohol regularly!!!” he replied confidently.

Thereafter the doctor never used this example! 🙂 🙂

Hope you understand the importance of understanding the things in a right sense! 🙂

A Message for the Day : Children are Curious

This is a translation of an episode of the popular radio program in India “Indru Oru Thagaval” means “A Message for the Day” by renowned Orator and Author Thenkachi Ko Swaminathan. The show, giving a message, was a hit and was broadcast for 12 years from 1988.

Once a father advised his son “Dear son, keep this in mind that you should always have friendship with kids who are more intelligent than you” His son replied “You are correct Dad, those who lacks behind need to be with someone who are intelligent than them! That’s why I remain that ‘More Intelligent boy’ !”. Father silently nodded.

It is so difficult to win an argument with today’s kids. Parents should encourage their kids to be smarter like this, should not confine them.

An American Psychologist advises it is good to allow the arguing habit among kids to some extend. If your kids engage with any argument with you, please do not stop them by yelling at them that they are too old to talk. There is nothing wrong in their act. It is a myth that kids will become rude in the future if they are allowed to engage in arguments with elders.

When your kids behave smarter than you, parents need to learn to be proud about it instead of feeling ashamed about it. There is no need of the Ego with your kids when you are mature enough to handle so many odd things in life. So always listen to your kids when they try to engage a conversation with you. Be patient with them.

KidsTry to understand their logic and reasoning for what they have done or about to do. There are parents who just act like listening and keep their mind somewhere, this is nothing but a negligence.

For instance, a mother called his son who was busy playing cricket. He just replied her to wait for some time as he was batting and that is an important stage for him in his game. On such occasions mothers should understand the kids that they are sincere in what they do and have to let them do it. Please do not get angry about them and force them to leave the game. If it happens then he will feel dejected, annoyed and angry and surely this is not good for him.

Even kids have their rights to speech and psychologists do advocate this.

Another thing that happens so frequently is that kids always pester parents with questions and silly doubts. You should not go mad at them. A son asked his father “Dad, why things fall down when we drop it?”. He replied, “because gravity pulls it down, son”. Again he asked “Why Gravity pulls down, why not it pushes it up?” His father excused away on the pretext of a phone call 🙂

Yes, it is tough to answer all the questions they ask. They are curious all the time. But let them know that you will tell them the answer some other time. (Seek some help to find answers for them. Google may help a lot.)

A similar incident happened in a classroom. “Dear students, Some day the earth will be doomed, volcanoes will blast, meteors will fall on the earth and destroy everything” the teacher created a panic indeed.

A student politely stood up and asked “Sir, will that day be a holiday for us or not?” 🙂 Yes he is in his own world. So as other kids!

Story : Losing something is not a reason to worry

A poor family of a worker, lived in a small town. He worked hard and honest though his earnings were just enough to meet his family’s day to day needs. One day his wife went to a vegetable market and she has just 10 Rupees with her. That could be enough for buying vegetable for two days for her family.

6DietingTipsShe carefully picked a few vegetables in a very little quantity and calculated the price before paying the money. It was well within 10 Rupees. The shopkeeper checked the vegetables and asked her to pay 9 Rupees. She checked her money purse, but the 10 Rupee note was missing. The purse was torn and old, she had lost the money somewhere. With no choice she returned the vegetables and returned home, searching all the way for the rupee note.

Her husband asked her what happened? “I lost the money somewhere”, she showed the torn purse. He consoled her to leave that and not to worry about it. But she knew the value of the hard earned money. She leaned on his shoulders and cried.

The next day she went to market again, but kept the money in her palm so she does not lose it this time. On the way she found a little boy with a school bag crying and she walked to him.

“What happened? Why are you crying?”

“I did not pay the Flag fee to the school and the teacher sent me out of the class. He asked me not to come to school here after” the boy broken into tears even more.

Temporary Folder4“Do not cry. What is your father doing?” She wiped his tears with her saree.

“I do not have father, my mother is a brick cutter.”

“How much you need to pay?” she asked with a worried face.

“Ten Rupees”, he replied.

Without even thinking for a moment, she gave the money to him and walked him to his school nearby. He paid the fees to his teacher while she watches and he came out and thanked her.

He ran inside the classroom with a merry face.

She returned home without buying the vegetables. “Where are the vegetables?, even today, you lost the money?” he was a bit annoyed.

“No”, she told him what happened.

He did not get angered or any disappointment “see, you are not crying today, but you lost the same money yesterday, you know why?”

She was unable to explain why.

He answered “Our worries are not because we lost money! In both cases we lost money, but only the way you look at it has changed. You felt better when you know that you lost money for some good reason. You have bought home the little boy’s happiness instead of vegetables now!”
